JI-TE HOUSE OF SHAR-PEI
THE CHINESE SHAR-PEI
Once known as the rarest breed in
the world, the ancient ChineseShar-Pei was virtually on the brink of extinction
back in the early 1970s when a Hong Kong fancier appealed to Americans
for help in saving the breed. A few were imported, breeding programs set
up and its popularity mushroomed as people were attracted by the intelligence
and charm of the breed. Like the Chow Chow, the Shar-Pei is one of the
rare breeds that have a blue-black tongue. Its bristly coat appears several
sizes too large for a Shar-Pei pup, but most grow up to do a fair job of
filling out the wrinkles as adults. Any solid coat color is acceptable.
Preferred height is 18 to 20 in., with weight from 40 to 55 lb. Somewhat
aloof to strangers, the dogs have a natural instinct to guard home and
family and are intensely loyal to their owners. Please open the door to
J-Te House to see our Shar-Pei family or for further information.
